Spoilers! Spoilers!
Since 1962, Atlas Industries (a multi-billion dollar corporation) has been the leading name in Rebirth Engineering. Atlas manufactures new reanimated sentient beings (second-class citizens known as Patchwork people/Patchworks/Patchies) made up of body parts of different corpses stitched together.
This is the first election where Patchies are able to vote and Senator Edgar Bates is up for reelection, the Senator hires a Patchie journalist... Ms. Brynn Drew (a Patchwork person made from four different women), he wants to know what goes on behind the scenes in the creation of Patchies at Atlas Industries (one of his big money donors to his campaign) and the struggles that Patchwork voters (who live in slums) experience.
During her investigation Brynn will encounter a grave-robbing duo, an in-house Atlas Industries motherly figure that helps new Patchies upon Rebirth (since the process eliminates previous memories), two pleasure Patchies, a pimp, the leader of the Human Salvation Society (citizens who want to protect their way of life from the corruption of Patchwork influence), a nurse at a Patchie Veteran's hospital, a Patchie Vietnam vet, a Pastor of the Assembly of Man (the first established religion celebrating Man's accomplishment in making Patchworks), a Deacon of Forest Creek (the church that thinks that Patchies are made in sin and are without souls), a Captain who worked with Forest Creek to find Frankenstein's creature in the Arctic, a Patchie popstar/actor (star of the award-winning remake of The Bride of Frankenstein), a Patchie mixed martial artist addicted to Snip and Patchie arsonists.
What startling secrets will Brynn find in a USB stick filled with encrypted files from Atlas Industries? What will happen to Brynn's inside source at Atlas? Why is Senator Bates in bed with Forest Creek? Will Bates be reelected? Who is making the street drug for Patchies known as Snip? Did the Doctor who improved upon the process of Rebirth really die in his sleep? What will Brynn discover hidden in Antarctica? You will need to get Cody's book to find out.
I give it a 9/10. A fascinating political and social science fiction novel with a gorgeous brand new painted cover (clearly an homage to Frank Henenlotter's 1990 comedy horror film) by Benjamin Marra. Cody introduces us to the mirror world of Patchwork where Mary Shelley's Victor Frankenstein and H. P. Lovecraft's Herbert West (Reanimator) are actual historical figures. Fans of the Alien Nation media franchise and the films of Paul Verhoeven will love this book! Highly recommended!
