Void Rivals #28 review

War continues, next on Void Rivals!

The Quintesson War continues in issue # 28 of Void Rivals! Void Rivals is Robert Kirkman’s sci-fi comic that tells the tale of two crumbling planets linked by a “Sacred Ring” (it’s not Halo), their peoples at war for generations. When a member of each culture are stranded together, the two find they must put aside their differences if they want to survive. This story takes place in the so-called “Energon Universe”, Skybound Entertainment’s initiative to relaunch properties like Transformers and G.I. Joe within a shared universe that also happens to include the original characters and setting of Void Rivals.

Penciler Andrei Bressan and colorist Dee Cunniffe join Robert Kirkman for the fourth part of “Quintesson War”. In this instalment, the Quint invasion continues on both Agorria and Zertonia as the Quintessons up their game and level up in response to resistance from both planets. Proximus has had his suppressed memories unlocked and Cobra-La has entered the fight, just in time for more chaos to be unleashed!

That Proximus dude is pretty cool.

He is, and with last issue’s self-revelation that he is Solila’s long-lost little brother, he has a whole new reason for pressing forward. That is, unless the Quintesson War gets in the way! I like Proximus; he’s got a cool design, he uses a bow as his main weapon (I'm a Hawkeye stan), and his backstory is just generally interesting. Kirkman’s made him into a standout character here and I even wouldn’t say no to an action figure of him!

As for the titular characters themselves, Solila takes a knee for this issue but Darak gets a scene fighting side-by-side with his “uncle”, the great Agorrian general Dukan. Even after last issue’s Energon boost to give the resistance an edge against the Quints, those treacherous squids still have an ace up their sleeve and it feels like we are approaching the endgame of this story arc.

Quintessons have sleeves?

Apparently! And they produce the “War Judge” from them! The Quintesson War Judge has an “end boss” feel to it so I'd wager the next two issues will focus on dealing with that. While not the most menacing I've seen the Quintessons portrayed in fiction, it is nice to see Kirkman upping their threat level.

All the main characters in this series are converging to repel the Quintessons, so I am looking forward to seeing how everyone will come together. Even Pythona and Cobra-La have arrived and I wonder if the Skuxxoid will show up by the end too. Let’s hope Kirkman can stick the landing on what has been a fairly exciting arc.

Cube?

These last two parts have been, for lack of better term, a bit “middling” as Kirkman builds towards a finale, but it seems the stage is set at last. I am enjoying this arc, but like I said, I’ve seen the Quintessons be much more of a threat in things like Transformers: Cyberverse and all the way back to Transformers Marvel UK. Still, some great art and character moments keep this afloat and I’m eager to see how this arc ends.

Void Rivals #17 review

Void Rivals Has Secrets To Reveal! It does and it continues here with issue # 17! Void Rivals is Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici’s sci-fi comic that tells the tale of two crumbling planets linked by a “Sacred Ring” (it’s not Halo), their peoples at war for generations. In this seventeenth issue, the secret of Zerta Trion is revealed, Darak has a “friendly” chat with his father, and Proximus is on the rampage! Proximus? He was cool. He was! And that continues here as him and his new kid sidekick go on a quest together. It’s unclear exactly what Proximus wishes to get out of it, but he’s clearly no longer...

Transformers #18 (2023) review

Is Shredhead totally in my face? Yup! With Robert Kirkman’s Void Rivals having launched Skybound’s Energon Universe, noted writer/artist rolled-into-one Daniel Warren Johnson takes the reins on the linchpin of this initiative, the flagship Transformers comic series! Well, he maintains the reins on the writing of this series at least, as does Mike Spicer on colors. Jorge Corona has taken over regular penciling duties with a style all his own. In this eighteenth issue, Shredhead kills some guys you may have liked, Ultra Magnus boxes a helicopter, and the Decepticon civil war comes to an end with the return of… well, c’mon, you know. Does Shredhead arrive at the fireworks factory? There’s actually relatively little to do with Shredhead here, aside from an opening fight scene where he showcases how badazz he is by killing some name characters. One of the victims in particular I was kind of annoyed by, considering he just got his first new toy in decades and has always been a fan favorite f...
